How does everyone else have the cutest living room?!
And other things I wonder during Zoom meetings...
I have found that my envy is inevitably triggered by Zoom calls recently. Seeing other folks in their homes with their pets and significant others, drinking tea or coffee they made for themselves, getting cozy on their couch or at their home office desk sends me into a jealousy spiral. I want what they have. Honestly, it’s embarrassing to feel that way since I do have a comfortable home, but it’s not my home. I feel like a spoiled brat event acknowledging these feelings.
My jealousy is also consistently triggered when I see artists making time for their craft, creating inspiring pieces, and successfully reaping the benefits of their hard work. I miss that feeling — being proud of something I created and actually selling it. I haven’t sold a physical item I created in years and, to be honest, I’ve been missing it a lot lately. I am jealous of the artists who have a point of view, a style of creating, and the means to make the work they want to make.
I do still spiral. I do still pity myself and throw little, internal tantrums. I want that! I want a home that is mine and an art practice that is mine! I also fully recognize how painfully privileged and self-indulgent these thoughts are — I have a home and I am currently writing this piece (writing is still the mode of creating that I am most comfortable with). So I actually already have both of the things I desire when I feel my jealousy is triggered, but it isn’t exactly right.
This is the space where we will spend some time together on Saturday in my upcoming Transform Jealousy Virtual Workshop. We will explore our jealousy triggers (especially as they relate to your creative practice), tease out what we actually desire for ourselves, identify the systemic and structural barriers to achieving those goals, identify where we are overly concerned with individual success over community wellness, and work towards embodying a feeling of gratitude and joy for those who are achieving that which we want for ourselves.
This is a donation-based workshop, so pay what you can! If you can’t make it to the live event, don’t worry because everyone who signs up will also get a recording emailed to them. I can’t wait to ~virtually~ see you there :)
September Workshops
We are excited to announce that in-person workshops are returning to Broad Room this month! They will be socially distanced, limited to under 10 participants, and outdoors in the Broad Room backyard.
Our resident artist, Jasmine, will be leading the classes. She will guide you through making your own copper plated ring and/or necklace, turning a flower from your garden into a piece of copper jewelry, and an acrylic pour over class!
